Picking a gamertag feels easy until every name you try comes back as taken, or the only free one looks like a string of random letters. The pressure is even higher when you know a second change on Xbox or PlayStation costs money.
Our gamertag generator helps by building clean console tags of 12 characters or fewer, which fits Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. Each one is easy for friends to search for and easy to shout in party chat.
How Long Can a Gamertag Be on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam?
Each platform sets its own limit, and Xbox has the shortest one. We cap this generator at 12 characters for that reason, because a tag that fits Xbox will fit the others too.
- Xbox: Gamertags can be up to 12 characters, and if your choice is already taken, Xbox can still give it to you with a number suffix after the name.
- PlayStation: An online ID can be 3 to 16 characters, must start with a letter, and can use letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores.
- Steam: Your profile name can be changed for free at any time, and it is the name other players see in most Steam games.
The first gamertag change on Xbox and the first online ID change on PlayStation are free. After that, both platforms charge a fee, and PlayStation Plus members pay less for an online ID change.
One small catch applies when you use a seed word, because some results join it to another word with a period. PlayStation does not accept periods in an online ID, and an underscore works there instead.
How Do You Generate a Gamertag?
Here is the order we suggest to get from an empty box to a tag you are happy with:
- Start With a Word You Like: Type a short word into the seed box, or leave it empty if you want the tool to surprise you.
- Choose a Tag Style: Pick Xbox Classic Compound, PSN & Steam Clean, or Retro & OG Handles, or keep All Categories Mix on for a bit of everything.
- Press Generate and Scan the List: Each batch removes duplicates, which means every tag on screen is different.
- Save the Strong Ones: Tap the heart on each tag you like, and they will wait for you in the Saved panel.
- Check It on Your Console: Type your top pick into the name change screen on Xbox or PlayStation to see whether it is free before you confirm anything.
Which Gamertag Style Should You Choose?
We built three styles around the looks people search for most, from a classic two-word tag to something with an old-school arcade feel.
Xbox Classic Compound
This style pushes two words together, like SilentWolf or CrimsonHawk, which is how gamertags have looked since the early days of Xbox Live. The words lean dark and animal-themed, and they are easy to say over a headset.
PSN & Steam Clean
These tags use one strong idea, such as AuraPrime or VortexCore, and they skip symbols. A clean tag like this ages well, which matters if you plan to keep it for years.
Retro & OG Handles
Retro tags borrow from arcades and old consoles, with results like ArcadeKid, PixelPunk, or TurboRacer. Endings such as 64, 86, and OG give them a throwback feel without making them hard to read.
How Do Titles Like Sir_ and Captain_ Change a Gamertag?
The Symbol Decorations menu here adds titles and tails instead of fancy symbols, because console name fields are strict about special characters. You can choose Sir_, Lord_, Dr_, Captain_, _OG, _v1, 99, or the classic xX_Name_Xx.
The 12-character cap only covers the base tag. A title like Captain_ adds eight characters, and you will need a short base, such as Lynx or Vex, to keep the full tag inside the Xbox limit.
The same goes for Leetspeak Mode and Add Suffix Numbers. We suggest trying one of them at a time, because a tag with a title, numbers, and swapped letters is very hard for a friend to type.
What Makes a Gamertag Easy to Find?
A simple test helps here: imagine a friend trying to add you after hearing your tag once in party chat. If they can type it correctly on the first try, the tag is doing its job.
- Real Words: Tags made of real words are much easier to spell than invented ones, especially over a noisy mic.
- Few Numbers: One short number at the end is fine, but numbers in the middle leave people guessing.
- Nothing Personal: Your real surname or birth year in a tag gives strangers information they do not need.
- No Copying: Tags that copy a famous streamer or pro player can confuse people and may get reported.
Which Gamertag Should You Lock In?
Console name changes cost money after the first free one, which is why we would only lock in a tag you will still like years from now. Keep two backups in your Saved panel in case your favorite is taken.
